Tub-to-Shower Conversion in Centretown, Ottawa

A familiar bathroom can feel completely different with a thoughtfully designed shower. For this recent BathUp project in a condo in Centretown, Ottawa, we replaced an existing bathtub and small white wall tiles with a custom tiled shower featuring marble-look walls, a mosaic floor, and sliding glass doors.

The renovation focused on the bathing area while retaining the surrounding bathroom layout. The result brings a fresh, coordinated look to the room, with practical features that make everyday showering more comfortable.

From a Traditional Bathtub to a Custom Shower

Before the renovation, the bathroom had a standard alcove bathtub, a curtain rod, and a small-format tiled surround. We removed the bathtub and existing wall tiles, opening the area for the new shower installation.

The new shower occupies the former bathtub area, showing how a targeted renovation can transform a bathroom without replacing every fixture or changing the entire floor plan.

Marble-Look Walls and a Mosaic Shower Floor

We installed 24 × 24-inch marble-look wall tiles, with a white background and distinctive grey veining. The larger tile format creates a cleaner visual rhythm, while tiling up to the ceiling gives the shower a cohesive, finished appearance.

For the custom shower base, we used hexagonal mosaic tile with a centre drain. The smaller pieces follow the floor’s slope toward the drain, while their pattern adds texture and complements the larger wall tiles.

The combination balances a bold marble-inspired wall finish with finer detail underfoot.

Glass Doors, Rainfall Showerhead, and Thoughtful Details

Clear sliding glass doors keep the tilework visible and help the bathroom feel more open. Because the door slides within the enclosure, it does not require swing space beside the toilet.

The completed shower includes an overhead rainfall showerhead and a separate handheld shower for flexibility during daily use and cleaning. A folding shower seat provides a seating option and folds against the wall when it is not needed. Grab bars provide additional support, and a recessed ceiling light illuminates the shower area.

Together, these elements bring comfort and practicality into the design without overwhelming the compact room.

A Focused Renovation with a Noticeable Result

This Centretown project demonstrates the difference a tub-to-shower conversion can make. The existing toilet, cabinet, and bathroom floor remain part of the room, while the new shower becomes its focal point.

Marble-look tile, a detailed mosaic base, clear glass, and carefully selected fixtures create a brighter, more contemporary bathing area that feels connected to the rest of the bathroom.
